WHY SPOT X

A hotel that could only be here.

After years of staying in hotels that could have been anywhere, we set out to build one that could only be here.

We started with the room.

Nothing came from a catalog. Every piece of furniture was designed for SPOT X, and every choice had to make your day easier.

  • Showers, not tubs.Walk-in showers with real subway tile, easier to keep truly clean.
  • A nightstand you can actually use.Wall-mounted lamps and built-in outlets and USB ports keep the surface free for your phone, your watch and your jewelry.
  • Closets left open on purpose.Your clothes stay ready for the day, and nothing gets forgotten at checkout.
  • A bench that works twice. It covers the air-conditioning unit, keeps the air flowing, and gives you room for your bags.
  • A mirror made for getting ready.Touch-control lighting for makeup or a clean shave.

And the few things that matter most, done right: a Sealy mattress with soft, high-thread-count linens, Moen and Kohler showers, and a gym with Matrix equipment.

Then we wrapped the hotel in three colors.

Each one honors the history of Central Florida, a place whose roots go far beyond the theme parks.

Orange: Where Orlando Began

Before the rockets. Before the castles. There were the groves.

Read the local storyClose the story

Picture Central Florida in spring: endless rows of dark-green trees, and the scent of orange blossom drifting for miles. This is the color of our beginning, and of the fruit that put Orlando on the map.

A seed from across the ocean.

Spanish settlers carried the first oranges to Florida in the 1500s and planted them near St. Augustine. Over three centuries the trees marched south and inland until citrus became the lifeblood of this land. When Florida became a state in 1845, "Mosquito County" traded its name for a sweeter one: Orange County.

Florida's golden rush.

From 1875 to 1895, Orlando was the beating heart of Florida's citrus trade. Railroads hauled crates of sunshine north, and grove fortunes turned small towns into cities.

Then came the winter of 1894–95. In a few bitter nights, the Great Freeze turned the groves black. Many walked away. The ones who stayed replanted, one tree at a time.

One of them was Dr. Philip Phillips, a Tennessee physician who lost his first grove to the freeze. He came back in 1897 and built one of the largest citrus empires in America. In 1929 his company pioneered flash pasteurization, which took the metallic taste out of canned juice and put Florida on breakfast tables across the nation. In 1954 he sold more than 3,000 acres of groves to Minute Maid, one of the largest grove sales in Florida history. By the 1950s, from a single tower in Clermont, you could look out over some 17 million citrus trees across eight counties.

The groves faded. The color never did.

Today Florida grows barely 5% of the oranges it grew at its peak. Citrus still runs through Orlando's soul, though. It's in Orange Avenue and Orange Blossom Trail, in the Dr. Phillips neighborhood, and in old grove towns like Winter Garden and Winter Park. It's in the Citrus Bowl, which started in 1947 as the Tangerine Bowl, was renamed in 1983 through a deal with the Florida Citrus Commission, and still kicks off every New Year's at Camping World Stadium as the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl. And it's on the court: in 2019–20 the Orlando Magic traded their famous pinstripes for orange, with "ORL" across the chest and one line to explain it: "From orange groves to Orange County. This is the ORL." A season later the pinstripes came back in orange, for what Orlando is famous for: sunshine and citrus.

Our orange.

At SPOT X Hotel Orlando, our orange honors all of it: the Spanish settlers, the growers who replanted after every freeze, the pioneers who reinvented juice, and a city that kept its color long after the groves were gone. Orlando is the Theme Park Capital of the World, and our orange is a reminder of where it all began.

Blue: Where Orlando Looks Up

Long before the world came here to play, Central Florida was looking up.

Wings over the groves.

In 1940, with war on the horizon, the Army Air Forces took over the skies above the orange groves. Orlando’s first airport became Orlando Army Air Base. New airfields opened at Pinecastle and in Kissimmee. B-17s and B-24s thundered overhead as bomber crews and pilots trained for combat. In 1946, the Bell X-1 rocket plane, soon to become the first aircraft to break the sound barrier, made its first test flights over Pinecastle.

Three letters on your boarding pass.

Col. Michael N.W. McCoy was already a legend. He volunteered to fly with the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1939, before America entered World War II, and he went on to command the very first B-47 jet bomber wing. On October 9, 1957, while flying a demonstration with a British Royal Air Force officer aboard, his B-47 began to break apart low over Orlando. Witnesses watched the burning bomber turn away from the homes below in its final seconds. It came down northwest of the city. All four men aboard were killed, and no one on the ground was hurt. The next year the base was renamed in his honor. In 1962, during the Cuban Missile Crisis, a U-2 spy plane took off from McCoy for its final mission over Cuba. When the base closed in the 1970s, it became Orlando International Airport, and it kept his name in its code: MCO.

Orlando’s own sky heroes.

In 1960, Joe Kittinger, a boy raised in Orlando, stepped out of a balloon 102,800 feet above the Earth and fell for four and a half minutes, a record that stood for 52 years. John Young, Orlando High School class of 1948, became the first person to orbit the Moon alone, walked on its surface on Apollo 16, and commanded the very first Space Shuttle flight. Today the road that bears his name, John Young Parkway, runs through Orlando to Kissimmee.

A university born for the Moon.

In 1963, Florida founded a new university to train the scientists and engineers the space program needed. Its first classes began in 1968. A year later, right here in Central Florida at Kennedy Space Center, Apollo 11 lifted off and carried humans to the Moon for the first time. That school is now the University of Central Florida, with more than 70,000 students, one of the largest universities in America.

The next giant leap.

In April 2026, Artemis II lifted off from the same space center and carried four astronauts around the Moon, farther from Earth than any humans had ever traveled. The Moon is calling again, and Mars waits beyond it. When the day comes, the journey may well begin right here in Central Florida.

Our blue.

At SPOT X Hotel Orlando, our blue honors that sky: the young airmen who trained above the groves, the pilots who gave their names to our runways and roads, and the dreamers who launched from our own coast. Look up. The story isn’t finished.

Green: Where the Wild Begins

A few miles from the lights of International Drive, a quiet creek starts one of the greatest journeys in nature.

Read the local storyClose the story

The Everglades begin here.

Most people picture the Everglades in South Florida, but the journey starts in Central Florida. Shingle Creek is a small stream that pioneers once lined with cypress trees, which they cut into roof shingles. It gathers the rain in southwest Orange County and slips quietly south. It is considered the northernmost headwater of the Everglades. Seven miles later it reaches Lake Tohopekaliga in Kissimmee, the first link in the Kissimmee Chain of Lakes. From there the water flows down the Kissimmee River into Lake Okeechobee, then spills south as the famous “River of Grass”: a sheet of water up to 60 miles wide, moving barely half a mile a day, until it reaches Florida Bay more than 200 miles away. That journey begins right here.

You don’t have to drive south to feel it, either. Airboats roar across Lake Toho and the Kissimmee lakes, past alligators and wading birds, just as they do in Naples. The river itself got a second life. In the 1960s it was straightened into a canal. In 2021, crews finished bringing it back: about 40 miles of winding river and nearly 25,000 acres of wetlands, in what is considered one of the largest ecosystem restorations in the world.

Springs of living water.

Beneath your feet lies the Floridan Aquifer, a hidden sea of water in limestone that stretches about 100,000 square miles under five states. Where it breaks through to the surface, it becomes a spring. Florida has more than 1,000 springs, what may be the largest concentration of freshwater springs on Earth. Groundwater like this supplies about 90% of Floridians’ drinking water.

Just 20 minutes north of Orlando, Wekiwa Springs pours about 42 million gallons of crystal-clear water a day into the Wekiva River, always at 72°F. The river is fed by some 30 springs and has been a National Wild and Scenic River since 2000. Black bears, bobcats and alligators still roam its banks.

Less than an hour north, Blue Spring sends 102 million gallons a day into the St. Johns River, and every winter it becomes a sanctuary. When the river turns cold, manatees crowd into the spring’s warm water to survive. In the 1970s, researchers counted 36 of them. On January 21, 2024, park staff counted 932, the largest gathering ever recorded there.

Our green.

At SPOT X Hotel Orlando, our green honors the wild heart of Central Florida: the creek that begins the Everglades, the springs that give us our water, and the creatures that still call this place home. The parks make their own magic. This is the original kind.
